For an extremely limited time, Apple authorized reseller and AppleInsider sponsor B&H Photo is —Silver, Space Gray, and Gold —that Apple offers, with free expedited shipping (or 45 minute in-store pickup) and no tax if you live outside NY state. Our historical data confirms these are the lowest prices we've ever seen —across the board —for 12' MacBooks. While Best Buy did have a few entry models at $300 off during recent holiday shopping season, it did not extend those steep discounts across the brawnier configurations. It also collects sales tax on all orders. B&H says these prices are part of a promotion that will only last for a limited time. At the same time, B&H is resurrecting the lowest prices we've seen on Apple Watches, knocking listed below.

Each includes free expedited shipping and no sales tax for customers outside NY state.

Snakedoc: You will, if you look on Ebay, find new batteries offered in your preferred price range. But don't buy one: most of them are plain junk, and there's no reliable way to tell which (some even bear counterfeit Apple labels). Typical experiences reported by people who have paid $40-60 for them include batteries that fail to charge at all, fail to report their charge level properly, lack the capacity that was advertised for them, fail to give a low-battery alert at the appropriate time, or cause the computer to shut down completely instead of sleeping if the battery is drained during use. It is worth it if you have multiple batteries. I've been thinking of getting one but have been waiting for the price to go down. Especially since PowerBook G4s are now old.

THAT'S the kind of thing that you would want to purchase on eBay. For me who has two batteries for my 12-inch PowerBook, the only way to charge the second battery is to leave the laptop plugged in and pop the battery in. This is not ideal but does work if you don't plan on being on the go.

When I still had my Pismo PowerBook, I had three batteries. While I could charge two batteries in both expansion bays, if I needed the optical drive, I'd have to pull out the battery.

By the same token, if I needed to charge the two batteries but was using the laptop, I could leave the batteries in the external charger and leave them there. (I bought a battery charging dock for that machine by the way. My PowerBook Pismo model). There's also this alternative: The benefit to these external chargers is that you can charge your batteries and use your laptop away from being connected to A.C. For instance, let's say you have two batteries that are currently fully charged.

But you are away from your desk so now you are on battery and eventually it depletes. You still need to be away from any power source (for whatever reason) so you pop in the second battery. Now your problem is how are you going to charge that depleted battery? You have to put it in your laptop and plug the laptop in to charge it. But you still need to be away from your desk so there's no way to charge the battery. External charger to the rescue. Let us know which device you do end up getting, if you get one of those external chargers.

They're not expensive for nothing. They do serve their purpose. Charging your batteries (only if you have multiple ones) via your laptop isn't always the most convenient way. Of course, if you had only one battery, I wouldn't recommend buying an external charger.

By the way, I've bought most of my batteries on eBay. I only bought one at the Apple Store which was at a reduced price (open box. Yes, there are sometimes special clearance sales, but unannounced). The rest I got on eBay. All genuine Apple ones. (I don't buy the cheap new ones shipped from Hong Kong).

Not all batteries on eBay are bad or counterfeit. Sometimes someone will buy extra and find they never use it. Sometimes, they do use it but for whatever reason, upgrade their machine to something else and then all their old accessories are no longer useful with the new one (say, MacBook to MacBook Pro). In one case, a school was selling surplus supplies. The batteries weren't new-in-box, but they were definitely brand new since I tested the cycle count and it was never used.
